BMW teases hot new M3 and M4 models

The two cars are currently being tuned on racetracks ahead of their debut later this year

BMW has revealed new teaser images and further details about its upcoming new M3 and M4 models.

Set to debut later this year, the M3 is the hot variant of the 3 Series Saloon, with the M4 being the same for the 4 Series. The new models have been spied testing at the famous Nurburgring circuit in Germany, and are now testing at the Sachsenring in Saxony, with BMW showing off official teaser images of the new performance variants undergoing testing there.

While both the M3 and M4 are heavily camouflaged in the images, the muscular styling can still be seen on the two cars – shown with the wider wheelarches, larger air intakes at the front and quad exhaust system at the rear.

BMW has also announced new engine details, too, with both the M3 and M4 set to use a newly developed straight-six engine, which is set to offer superior performance next to the current cars.

In its regular guise, it will produce 473bhp, but a hotter Competition variant will also be available, which will push out an impressive 503bhp. That’s quite a step up in power compared to the 425bhp in the current M3/4 and 444bhp in the Competition models.

A six-speed manual is set to remain available in the 473bhp version for those that want to change gear themselves, with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox coming with the Competition. The rear-wheel-drive setup is also set to remain the standard setup, but with all-wheel-drive xDrive variants set to follow at a later date.

BMW says that engineers are still fine-tuning the M3 and M4 on track, following testing in Miramas in Southern France as well as harsh weather appraisals in Arjeplog, Sweden.

Both the M3 and M4 are set to be unveiled in September and are likely to arrive in showrooms at the start of 2021.
