BMW teases latest all-electric concept – the iNext

Scheduled to be built from 2021, this new design project incorporates all the major developments in motoring, including autonomy and zero-emission driving.

The next in the series of all-electric BMW concepts has been teased by the German brand, with this latest one – the iNext – set to be unveiled later this year.

Following on from the all-electric i Vision Dynamics concept that was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year and the iX3 concept from the 2018 Beijing Auto Show, the iNext is set to “incorporate all major strategic areas of innovation in a road-ready vehicle.”

That means that it’s likely to include autonomous driving features and features that allow connection to its surrounding environment so that it can monitor its surroundings and keep occupants safe.

The very blue preview image shows a rough outline of the upcoming design exercise, and it incorporates a built-up stance as well as elements of the current i3 hatchback at the rear.

As the flagship all-electric model, it will likely set the design agenda for BMW electrified cars in the coming years.

Production of the iNext is set to start in 2021 at the brand’s Bavarian Dingolfing plant in south-east Germany.

At a design meeting for the impending concept, BMW chairman Harald Krüger said: “The iNext project is our building kit for the future. It will benefit the entire company and all our brands.

“For the first time, we are combining all key technologies for future mobility in one vehicle. The iNext is fully electric, fully connected and also offers highly automated driving. We will be presenting the BMW iNext as a Vision Vehicle later this year.”
