To highlight the success of the M2 Coupe as sales have now surpassed 12,000 units, BMW has announced a special edition version of its smallest model.

Called the Black Shadow edition, it comes with exclusive design features to help it stand out against other M2s and will be available for customers to buy from April.

As the name suggests, the Black Shadow comes with an exclusive black exterior paint job, as well as 19-inch matt black alloy wheels surrounded by mixed tyres.

The exterior detailing also has a black theme, with the mirror caps finished in carbon, kidney grille surrounds and side panels in gloss black, a carbon-look rear diffuser and a black chrome finish for the M double tailpipes.

Racing-inspired touches have also been added for that extra exclusivity.

Mechanically, however, this special edition M2 comes with the same engine and setup as the standard model. That means 365bhp from its 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six, which is paired to a six-speed manual or optional seven-speed dual-clutch auto.

With a rear-wheel drive setup and specially-engineered suspension, the M2 can get from 0-60mph in 4.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph.

Prices and delivery dates are yet to be confirmed, but base M2 models start from £46,695.
