BMW unveils new 2 Series Gran Coupe

The new four-door coupe is based on the popular 1 Series hatchback

BMW has added a further new model to its range with the 2020 2 Series Gran Coupe.

It’s the fourth model in the German brand’s Gran Coupe line-up, and looks to rival models such as the Audi A3 Saloon and Mercedes CLA.

Based on the best-selling 1 Series, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is BMW’s first front-wheel-drive four-door model, though all-wheel-drive comes with the range-topping version.

Sharing a similar front end with the 1 Series, the differences emerge from the A-pillar backwards – particularly at the rear where its saloon-like body, new LED rear lights and slight boot lip spoiler distinguish the model from every other car in BMW’s range.

Three engines from the 1 Series line-up are offered from launch – the 138bhp 1.5-litre petrol 218i, a 187bhp 2.0-litre diesel (220d) and the sporty M235i xDrive, which features a 302bhp 2.0-litre petrol unit. With this engine, the 2 Series can sprint from 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds and reach a top speed limited to 155mph.

While not destined to be particularly practical, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is more spacious than the regular two-door 2 Series (based on the previous-generation 1 Series) – offering 430 litres of boot space (40 more than normal), as well as offering more kneeroom and headroom.

Prices start from £25,815 for the 218i and rise to £37,255 for the M235i. Three trim levels are offered – Sport, M Sport and M Performance.

Standard kit includes LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors and a large touch screen. M Sport adds a sportier styling pack, lowered suspension, a ‘personal assistance’ voice control system and access to further digital services. The flagship M235i (or M Performance) brings grey 18-inch alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, a performance exhaust system and an eight-speed sports automatic transmission.

A host of optional driver assistance tech, including a system that can stop a driver changing lane if someone is in their blind spot, as well as rear collision warning, a reversing assistant that can help driver to exit a tight parking space, as well as get in the space in the first place.

The new 2 Series Gran Coupe will be making its world premiere at next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show, but is on sale now. First deliveries are expected in early 2020.
