Bold new 2022 Vauxhall Astra revealed

The stylish hatchback gets a raft of new technology and new plug-in hybrid powertrains

Vauxhall has unveiled a next generation version of its best-selling Astra hatchback, which gets a striking new design and electrified powertrains for the first time.

Now entering its eighth generation, this latest Astra is the first to use a Stellantis platform shared with the Peugeot 308 and Citroen C4, moving away from General Motors underpinnings, which the firm used to be owned by.

Gaining a striking design featuring various elements from the new Mokka, it gets Vauxhall’s new ‘Vizor’ front end, which wraps the brand’s emblem and headlights behind one neat piece of glass. The headlights can also be upgraded to ‘Intelli-Lux Pixel’ light, which use 168 LED elements. The front also gets a wider and lower stance, while the rear gets a more sculpted look headed up by new LED rear lights.

Inside, the new Astra gets Vauxhall’s ‘Pure Panel’, which features two screens (one for the dials and the second for the media screen) measuring up to 10 inches each, merged together to give a far more futuristic look. The near button-free layout aims to ‘detox’ the cabin, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also included.

The adoption of the EMP2 platform also aims to provide a more dynamic driving experience, as well as far more driver assistance technology than its predecessor. A particular highlight is ‘Intelli-Drive’, which enables semi-automatic lane changes, while also being able to slow down for corners autonomously.

Another key feature on the new Astra are its new plug-in hybrid powertrains. While Vauxhall hasn’t announced full details, it’s likely to be the same 1.6-litre petrol-electric setup as found in the Vauxhall Grandland already. Combined power outputs of 178bhp and 222bhp are likely. A range of more conventional petrol and diesel options will remain available too, with outputs ranging from 108bhp to 128bhp.

Paul Willcox, managing director of Vauxhall, said: “The new Astra arrives with sensational design and class-leading levels of technology. With the choice of an electrified powertrain, it has been developed with utmost precision, down to the smallest detail. We are confident the next generation Astra has all it takes to become another best seller and continue to attract new customers to the brand.”

Vauxhall hasn’t announced prices for the new Astra, but you can expect an increase on the current model’s £19,740 starting price. It’s set to be available to order in the autumn, though first deliveries aren’t expected until the start of next year.
