Britain's most profitable speed camera locations revealed

Recently revealed data has given an insight into which speed cameras in Britain make the most money from speeding fines during a 12-month period.

The locations of the ten highest earning speed cameras in Britain have been revealed. The most profitable one has raked in at over £600,000 in the course of a year.

These details have emerged after the motorbike insurance specialists Carole Nash submitted a series of Freedom of Information requests to the UK’s largest county police constabularies.

Off the back of these requests, data from 2015 has revealed which ten speed cameras in Britain made the most money during this year and how much money they brought in from the speeding fines issued.

It’s estimated that the 10 most profitable speed cameras in the UK collectively raked in £3.2 million in speeding fines over a 12-month period. You can take a look at the infographic here.

Most profitable camera on A1

The biggest money maker amongst Britain’s speed cameras in 2015 was one located just south of Grantham on the A1 in Lincolnshire. This speed camera was responsible for as many as 6,064 fines and brought in £606,400 as a result.

This particular speed camera doesn’t actually exist anymore, as it was replaced by eight average speed cameras set up along this area of the A1 route during 2016.

The second most profitable speed camera in 2015 was one located further north in Lincolnshire, specifically on a section of the M180 close to Scunthorpe. This camera caught 5,853 drivers speeding and clocked up £585,300 in fines.

Three speed cameras on M25 in the top ten

Third and fourth in the list of most profitable speed cameras are both located on Britain’s busiest motorway – the M25. These two cameras collected £538,500 and £373,300 respectively in speed fines.

The fifth most profitable speed camera is one on the A12 which earned £305,400, while the sixth biggest money maker is yet another speed camera located on the M25, which brought in £255,400.

The head of marketing at Carole Nash, Rebecca Donohue, commented: “With some speed cameras issuing tickets that amount to well into the hundreds of thousands, it's understandable that, at times, motorists feel like they are being taxed again.

“It's really important to remember that such cameras are put in place to reduce accidents and save the lives of motorists and bikers, something which is far more important than any amount of money.”
