Can anyone break the Anglo-German dominance of F1?

If you’ve been following Formula 1 for at least a decade or so, you’ve probably noticed that German and English racing drivers have dominated the drivers’ championship.

Following a period of dominance by Michael Schumacher in the early 2000s, a few years of championship winning from Spain’s Fernando Alonso and Finland’s Kimi Raikkonen broke that particular streak. Since then though, the F1 drivers’ title has been taken by either a Brit (via Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button) or by a German (via Sebastian Vettel or Nico Rosberg).

But with a new F1 season approaching fast, and having seen the reigning champion – Germany’s Nico Rosberg – retire suddenly towards the end of last year, could the Anglo-German cycle be broken in 2017?

Going beyond merely observing the current field of teams and drivers, the sports betting website bwin has put together an infographic that breaks down the success of German and UK F1 drivers. It also attempts to analyse which nation is most likely to produce the next F1 champion from outside the two most dominating countries.

To preview this year’s Formula 1 season, bwin has also interviewed Formula One journalist Sarah Holt and you can check that out to find out who’s looking competitive and what changes there are for the sport.
