Caterham sales rise during successful 2017

The lightweight sports car manufacturer gained 51 orders more than in 2016, leading to an eight per cent hike

British sports car manufacturer Caterham posted an eight per cent sales increase in 2017, also meaning their best sales figures in over 20 years.

The Sussex-based brand sold 667 units in the last year, which is 51 more than 2016, and that increase was partly down to the introduction of the 60 SuperSprint special edition models, which all sold out within seven hours of being unveiled at the Goodwood Revival show in September.

43 per cent of those sales came from British shores, and Caterham experienced success on the continent too, as French sales increased by 35 per cent compared to 2016.

The brand also introduced its first sales division in Latin America last year with the help of Global X-Sports to help the brand’s worldwide appeal.

Caterham CEO Graham McDonald said: “The 60th anniversary of the Seven was always a year we intended to celebrate and reflect on our incredible heritage, but it has surpassed even our expectations.

“There’s no denying it’s a tough time for the automotive industry with uncertainty around Brexit and the continually evolving EU emission changes, WLTP, but that’s why it’s an even more exceptional achievement to secure the orders we have.

“Huge congratulations and personal thanks to the whole dealer network for the tireless work and dedication to the cause.”

Caterham currently offers nine models, ranging from the Seven 160 that has 80bhp at its disposal, up to the Seven 620R with a meaty 310bhp to launch the lightweight sports car to 60mph in 2.8 seconds.
