Construction begins for Polestar’s new factory

The Chinese-based Polestar Production Centre is now under construction and will be finished mid-2018.

Polestar has announced that construction of its new factory has begun.

The Polestar Production Centre is based in Chengdu, China, and will house production of the upcoming Polestar 1 hybrid performance car.

The factory is due for completion by mid-2018, and Polestar claims it will be the most environmentally-friendly car production plant in China, with the Swedish brand targeting a ‘Gold’ status in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) ratings.

As well as housing production of the Polestar 1, the centre will also host a customer experience, which will include product experts for sales assistance and a test track for potential buyers to push the performance of the car.

The Polestar brand was announced as a performance-focused spin-off of Volvo earlier this year, and the Polestar 1 will be its first production car.

It features a hybrid drivetrain, combining of a 2.0-litre petrol engine coupled to an electric motor that ultimately develops 592bhp and 1000Nm of torque, as well as being capable of 90 miles of pure-electric driving. The Polestar 1 is set to go on sale in 2019 and order books are now open.

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, said:

“Following the successful launch of the new Polestar brand in October, construction of the new Polestar Production Centre is the next step in turning our plans into reality.

“We are building a Production Centre that is a reflection of our brand. A facility that is modern, progressive, technically advanced and environmentally responsible. The Polestar Production Centre will be an embodiment of the Polestar brand.”
