Could this be Cupra’s first standalone car?

The Cupra Formentor concept showcases a potential performance coupe-crossover.

Cupra stamped its name on motoring with an impressive variant of the Seat Ateca at the end of last year, but now it’s showing how a car entirely of its own doing might look.

This is the Cupra Formentor — a coupe-crossover that will supposedly bring the joy of a performance car to the popular SUV trend. The Seat spin-off brand hasn’t confirmed it for production yet, but the concept looks ready for the road so don’t be surprised to see it built.

Named after a Mallorcan peninsula, the Formentor is inspired by the Seat 20V20 concept showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in 2015. That has resulted in a low, sleek silhouette and a dramatic sloping roofline. A brash stance courtesy of pronounced wheel arches and a quad-exhaust system hints to its performance credentials.

Under the bonnet of the concept is a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Exact details of what it consists of haven’t been revealed, but Cupra says 242bhp is delivered via a DSG transmission. It’s capable of nearly 30 miles on electric power alone, and handles ‘majestically’ as a result of a locking differential and VW Group’s Dynamic Chassis Control.

As Cupra is as much about luxury as it is performance, the Formentor features leather-wrapped bucket seats, a full-digital cockpit and a 10-inch ‘floating’ infotainment system.

The Cupra Formentor will make a public debut at the Geneva Motor Show, taking place from March 7-17. Expect to hear more on possible production following that.
