Cupra Leon PHEV set to launch

The Seat spin-off is expected to bring a plug-in version of the hatchback to the market, with the performance option set to have 245bhp on tap.

Seat’s performance spin-off Cupra is set to takes the covers off a plug-in hybrid version of the Leon hatchback before the end of this year.

The brand had confirmed that the Spanish hatchback would be electrified at some point in the near-future – but Auto Express has confirmed that the Leon PHEV is close to being revealed.

Seat chief executive officer Luca de Meo told the publication: “In 2020, the new generation of Leon will come to market in five-door and ST [estate] versions. it will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain that will produce up to 245bhp and less than 50g/km of CO2 emissions.

“Just before the end of 2020 the Cupra Leon and Cupra Leon ST, both with plug-in hybrid versions, will arrive.”

These reports follow the reveal of the Cupra Formentor, which will come with the same 245bhp plug-in setup and will be a model exclusive to the performance marque.

It’s unlikely that the model will lose conventional power units altogether though, as the current Seat Leon Cupra comes with the same engine as the Volkswagen Golf R that develops 286bhp – and despite its electrification targets, it is unlikely that Cupra will get rid of that fully at the moment.
