Cupra reveals new Tavascan concept ahead of Frankfurt Motor Show debut

The large SUV concept is Cupra’s first all-electric concept.

Cupra has revealed a new all-electric concept that aims to showcase the performance brand’s next steps towards electrification.

The Tavascan concept follows on from the plug-in hybrid Formentor, which was unveiled in February, and is yet another SUV from Seat’s former performance sub-brand.

It features two electric motors – one at each axle – to produce a combined 302bhp. This enables the Tavascan to accelerate from 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds, too.

The new EV also sits on Volkswagen’s new MEB platform – underlying all upcoming electric cars from the VW Group – and features a 77kWh lithium-ion battery enabling 280 miles of electric range.

As Cupra’s first electric concept, it previews where the Spanish manufacturer is heading as it looks to further distance itself from Seat. But it still carries over details from the Formentor – including a full-length rear light bar – but is much bolder than that car with its huge alloy wheels, swoopy styling and ‘coupe-like’ design.

The interior is equally bold, with a mix of textures and materials creating a striking cabin with leather bucket seats and diffused ambient LED lighting.

But one of the stand-out features is the 13-inch infotainment display, which can shift its focus between the driver and passenger when needed.

Currently the only car on sale badged as a ‘Cupra’ is the Ateca, based upon Seat’s model of the same name. From 2020, the Formentor will be the brand’s first standalone product – followed closely by another two performance PHEVs. When, and if, a production version of the Tavascan will materialise is still unclear.

The Tavascan will make its debut next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
