Drivers losing ten days a year due to rush hour traffic

A recent study has found that drivers in Britain are losing an average of ten days a year to sitting in rush hour traffic and congestion on the daily commute.

The insurance company Admiral looked at 13 cities across the UK, analysing the travel time of various routes into the centre of these major cities for a 9am arrival on a Monday - one of the busiest times to be driving.

This data was then compared to the same journey to the very same destination with an arrival time of 9am on a Sunday, when the roads are, on average, at their quietest. A central landmark in each city was marked as the final destination.

Most and least congested cities and routes revealed

In news unlikely to surprise anyone, London is found to be the worst city for jams. The research found that here commuters spend three times as much time in the car during rush hour, compared to the travel time on a quieter Sunday morning.

That adds up to an average of 53 minutes more in the car for just one journey, which equates to a whopping 398 hours each year, or 17 days.

Taking in all the UK cities studied into account, drivers who commute during rush hour to the city centre spend an average of ten whole days in traffic over the course of a year.

The research also looked into specific journeys and found that commuters travelling from Dartford to Trafalgar Square in London on a Monday morning typically face the longest journey times. The least congested journey analysed is one that takes drivers from Hexham to the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle.

Following London, the second worst UK city for rush hour congestion is Manchester, while Bristol is the third most congested and Glasgow and Birmingham complete the top five.

In contrast, Leeds is the least affected by congestion out of all UK cities analysed. In Leeds, an average of just 28 minutes is added to journeys by the rush hour traffic, although that is still double the time it takes for drivers to get to their destination.
