2017 proved to be a successful year for electrified vehicles as sales of plug-in models were more than 27 per cent up on 2016 figures.
The figures released by Go Ultra Low showed that last year saw the total amount of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on British roads breach the 130,000-mark, as 46,522 units were sold in the UK.
Many areas of the UK saw a large rise in EV sales, with the South West (140.3%), Scotland (69.5%) and London (41.3%) seeing the largest increase. In fact, only the South saw a drop in EV sales with a 0.5% decrease compared to 2016.
Drivers from London bought the most EVs last year, with 9,274 plug-ins purchased – up from 6,541 in 2016. The East (8,685) and West Midlands (7,987) came second and third.
Poppy Welch, head of Go Ultra Low, said: “2017 was a stellar year for electric vehicle registrations with strong growth of 27%, demonstrating the massive consumer appetite for 100% electric and plug-in hybrid cars.
“There are already more than 130,000 electric vehicles on UK roads, a figure that could pass 190,000 this year as new models come to market and consumers reap the cost saving benefits of electric driving.”
Go Ultra Low added that if the current EV market continues its current trend, 2018 could see more than 60,000 unit sales – taking the total amount of EVs on the road past 190,000.
