Facelifted 2020 BMW M5 Competition unveiled

Following the unveil of the 5 Series, the hot M5 has gained a fresher look and new technology

BMW has revealed an updated version of its M5 Competition, which gains new tech and a light styling refresh.

With the updated 5 Series having been shown a few weeks ago, it’s now time for the flagship M5 Competition to reveal its new face too. It benefits from the same styling updates as the regular saloon – including a slimmer and wider grille, slimmer LED headlights with a new signature and new C-shaped LED lights are the rear.

A new set of 20-inch alloy wheels are available, while a host of new colours have joined the line-up – such as Motegi Red, Brands Hatch Grey and Tanzanite Blue – while a black styling package is now included as standard.

Inside it gains a larger 12.3-inch main touchscreen, which is also available with BMW’s new ‘Intelligent Personal Assistant’ voice control system, too. Smartphone mirroring is also now fitted as standard – including Android Auto for the first time alongside Apple CarPlay , the latter only previously available as a subscription.

The M5 Competition’s engine remains the same as before – a mighty 4.4-litre V8 petrol unit, which produces 616bhp and 750Nm of torque. It means this BMW can sprint to 60mph in just 3.1 seconds and hit a top speed of 155mph, or 189mph with the optional ‘M Driver’s Package’ selected. It remains all-wheel-drive, too, with an eight-speed M Steptronic automatic gearbox helping to get that power down on the road.

Despite the engine remaining the same, though, BMW has made several performance tweaks – including a new damping system borrowed from the M8 Gran Coupe, which can be altered electronically depending on the need for comfort or performance.

There’s also a new ‘M Mode’ that allows the driver to change settings from ‘Road’ to ‘Sport’ in an instant. This disables the majority of the driver assistance features to provide a purer driving experience, and also changes the digital dials, head-up display and touchscreen to a sportier look.

The updated BMW M5 Competition is set to arrive in showrooms later this year, with prices starting from £98,095.
