Facelifted Vauxhall Astra revealed with major tech and engine updates

The revised model features new, more efficient engines

Vauxhall has revealed the first pictures and details of the facelifted Astra, with the updated model set to adopt further technologies from Peugeot and Citroen.

It’s really the new engines that are the most important aspect of the facelifted Astra. That’s because many of the new powertrains have been adopted from Peugeot, Citroen and DS models, with Vauxhall now being owned by their parent company, the PSA Group.

A new turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine is the highlight, with this engine being available with outputs of 108bhp, 128bhp and 143bhp. A further 1.4-litre petrol engine producing 143bhp is also offered. The sole diesel option announced so far is a 1.5-litre engine, producing either 104bhp or 120bhp. A new nine-speed automatic gearbox is also debuting in the latter diesel engine.

The new model aims to set the standard for efficiency, with CO2 emissions and fuel consumption reduced by up to 19 per cent compared with the outgoing model. The new Astra hatchback is also the most aerodynamic five-door hatchback in its class.

Vauxhall has kept the visual changes to a minimum. The key differences include a new front bumper, a revised front grille and new headlights.

Tech improvements have also been made to the front camera system – used for features such as automatic emergency braking and traffic sign recognition. An improved touchscreen also features, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity included as standard.

Vauxhall has also replaced the OnStar connected feature (fitted to the previous Astra as part of the General Motors tie-up) with a new optional E-Call emergency button function. Wireless charging and a heated windscreen are also new pieces of tech, which are offered on selected versions.

Full pricing and trim specifications will be announced in the coming months.
