Ferrari F12tdf supercar is as quick as a LaFerrari

Ferrari has unveiled first images and details on a new lightweight, ultra-fast supercar based on the F12 Berlinetta. It’s called the F12tdf and only 799 will be built.

According to Ferrari, the F12tdf pays homage to the Tour de France Automobile. This event has no relation to the similarly named cycling race but actually refers to a sports car endurance race that was held between 1899 and 1986.

Ferrari dominated the Tour de France race during the 1950s and 60s. A particularly successful car in the event was the 1956 250 GT Berlinetta, which the new F12tdf makes reference to.

The F12tdf is designed to feel as at home on a race track as it does on the road. The differences compared to a standard F12 includes lighter, more radical-looking and more aerodynamic bodywork which makes far more use of carbon fibre both inside and out. There’s also redesigns for the engine, transmission and running gear.

Compared to the standard model, the new F12tdf is 110kg lighter in overall weight and the output from the 6.3-litre V12 engine has increased from 731bhp to 769bhp.

The result of all these changes is that the F12tdf has reduced its zero to 62mph sprint time to just 2.9 seconds, two tenths of a second less than a regular F12. In fact, this supercar now has the same benchmark sprint time as the million-pound LaFerrari hybrid supercar. The top speed, meanwhile, is said to be in excess of 211mph.

The F12tdf also gains the same one-piece brake callipers used for the LaFerrari, so stopping distance as well as sprint time is very similar to the hypercar.

A launch date and pricing for the Ferrari F12tdf has yet to be confirmed, but it’s likely to start from somewhere between £275,000 and £300,000. A standard F12 Berlinetta currently costs £238,938.
