New displays to keep you informed

To ensure the driver knows what’s going on around them, BMW has fitted three different displays that provide a lot of information. The central 10.25-inch touchscreen displays the main infotainment features, such as media and satellite navigation, while the 12-inch Live Cockpit screen sits in the instrument binnacle to show essential driving info. BMW has also fitted a head-up display that is 16 per cent larger than in any other model and shows 3D graphics as well as additional features. BMW has installed the latest operating system to the setup to make it smoother than ever. The screens can be controlled by gesture control, the multifunction steering wheel or the click wheel on the central tunnel.

A raft of driver assistance features

The 8 Series provides a step towards fully autonomous driving thanks to the Driving Assistant Professional pack, which includes Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go – which detects what the car in front is doing and slows down accordingly – as well as steering and lane control assists. Distance warning, cross traffic warning, evasion aid and wrong-way warning are also included in the car’s setup.

The 8 Series can park itself

With the Parking Assistant feature, the car can park in either parallel or perpendicular spaces by itself and reverse up to 80 metres with the Reversing Assistant feature. The Parking Assistant Plus pack adds surround view, top view, panorama view and remote 3D view that can be displayed on the central touchscreen.

High-end lights that can see 600 metres ahead

As standard, the 8 Series comes with LED headlights, which are also the slimmest ever fitted to a BMW. But when the adaptive LED headlights and Laserlight units are added, drivers can light the road 600 metres ahead – which can be incredibly handy.

Plenty of chassis features to make it great to drive

Although the kit itself isn’t that new, it’s still great to have on the latest sports coupe. The adaptive M suspension helps you switch from comfortable cruiser to savage sports car in moments, whilst the integral active steering system ensures the car can be as nimble as possible. At higher speeds all the wheels move in the same direction when cornering, but when moving at a slower pace, the front and rear wheels turn in opposite directions to make the turning circle much smaller than normal.
