Five car air-con hacks to tackle the heatwave

The heatwave is here and it is hot! Here are some handy tips to help you cool your car faster without using a lot of fuel.

With there appearing to be no end in sight for the hot weather, drivers want to make sure they are cool enough in their cars.

Air conditioning is a great feature to have in your car to tackle it, but there are certain ways to ensure you get cold air circulating around your vehicle while the temperatures get up towards 30oC.

So what can we recommend to keep your car cool in the summer so you can stay comfortable?

Don’t start your car before you set off

To make sure your car cools efficiently, you need to be driving to ensure that the engine is turning fast enough to run the air conditioning compressor quickly. So, rather than letting the car run with the A/C on before you leave, start driving as soon as you can with it on so the car can cool down quicker.

Point the vents up and open the rear windows

To ensure you get cool air throughout, pointing the vents towards the roof with the air on full blast will force the cold air upwards, and with the rear windows open, it will mean the cool air can circulate and allow hot air out.

Turn off engine stop/start

If your car comes with a start/stop function, that will turn off the engine when the car’s halted and this will severely disrupt the effectiveness of the climate control. In heavy traffic, this can be a real issue, so turn the function off so that there’s a continuous flow of cool air.

Ensure the filters are clean

When filters get clogged up, it can severely affect the efficiency of the air flow into the cabin. Take your vehicle to a maintenance centre to replace any saturated filters if your car is a bit older, but filters in most modern vehicles can be easily found so you can sort it out yourself.

If your car comes with automatic climate control…

…let the system do its thing. It will judge the interior environment and adjust the fan speed and temperature to make the car comfortable for you. If you’re lucky bunch to have automatic climate control, you’ll be just fine in the hot weather.
