Five-star safety rating for Volvo XC40 in tougher Euro NCAP tests

The compact SUV scored 97 per cent for adult occupancy and 87 per cent for child occupancy, as well as high scores in the remaining categories.

Euro NCAP has awarded the Volvo XC40 with its highest five-star rating after undergoing the safety tester’s rigorous trials.

The small SUV scored highly on both adult and child occupancy – 97 per cent and 87 per cent respectively – thanks to its excellent crash structure and series of safety assistance systems.

In the vulnerable road users and safety assist categories, the XC40 also scored well, with 71 per cent and 76 per cent ratings respectively.

Following this rating, the XC40 joins the cars in the 60 and 90 series with the highest available score – helping to make Volvo one of the safest vehicle manufacturers on the road.

Malin Ekholm, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre, said: “The new XC40 is one of the safest cars on the market. It comes standard with the largest offering of safety technology of any small SUVs, helping drivers detect and avoid collisions, remain safely in their lane and reduce the impact of accidentally running off the road.”

After winning the European Car of the Year earlier on in 2018, this is the latest confirmation of the model’s quality and since its release has been one of the Volvo’s best-sellers.

Safety equipment available for the XC40 includes adaptive cruise control, oncoming lane mitigation, city safety autonomous braking, lane keeping aid, post-collision braking and lane departure warning.
