Ford collaborates with Jaguar Land Rover to make search for parking easier

The brands have funded UK Autodrive to develop a system where cars scan for empty spaces and then help other drivers find one.

Ford and Jaguar Land Rover have joined forces to help drivers save time when looking for parking spaces.

Ford commissioned a survey of 2,039 people, which found that UK drivers waste more than a day every year looking for a space – but the two brands are helping research to help motorists save time.

In conjunction with UK Autodrive – a government-funded project – technology is being developed so that people can find spaces quicker.

Using a vehicle’s parking sensors, all the empty spaces are picked out and then shared with other cars to show where spots are most likely to be.

The data is crowd-sourced to build a virtual map of a carpark so then drivers can find an empty spot much faster than normal.

Christian Ress, supervisor of automated driving at Ford Research and Advanced Engineering, said: “We understand how much wasted time and unnecessary stress is caused by searching for parking spaces in towns and cities.

“With our research into collaborative parking, we see an opportunity to hand that time back to drivers, helping them enjoy happier, healthier and more efficient journeys.”

The system is currently being tested by UK Autodrive in Milton Keynes, with the testing phase finishing in October.

UK Autodrive is a consortium funded by 15 companies and the British government, with funding totalling £20million.
