Ford Fiesta ST Ford Performance Edition: Why it’s the ultimate pocket rocket

Ford Fiesta ST Performance Edition: Why it’s the ultimate pocket rocket

Here’s why Ford’s exclusive hot hatch is one of 2020’s best driving cars.

If you could think of just one manufacturer that had built up a sterling reputation for its hot hatches over years, that firm would more than likely be Ford.

For numerous decades it has been right at the forefront of this sector, with models such as the Escort, Fiesta and Focus. Some of these classic models are now commanding huge prices, and it only strengthens the appeal of new models like the Fiesta ST.

Ford currently has an even spicier version of its junior hot hatch, with the bold Fiesta ST Ford Performance Edition. Here’s why we reckon it’s the ultimate pocket rocket…

Limited-edition status

A hallmark of a great hot hatch can often be one that isn’t sold in huge numbers – something that can help it to earn cult status as the years go on. That’s true of this new Fiesta ST Ford Performance Edition, which is a special version reserved for the UK, and is limited to just 600 units, making it an undoubted icon to fast Ford enthusiasts.

Performance tweaks

The regular Fiesta ST is already an absolute hoot behind the wheel, and while this special edition doesn’t add any more power, it features a number of tweaks to enhance the driving experience.

Slight weight savings have been introduced, but importantly the model sits on a special coilover suspension pack. This lowers the ride by 15mm at the front and 10mm at the rear and has been extensively tested at the infamous Nürburgring racetrack by Ford Performance engineers. It’s manually adjustable, with 12 bump and 16 rebound settings on offer.

Alongside this, it also features the ‘Performance Pack’, which brings a Quaife limited slip differential, launch control and performance shift light indicators to make this, quite simply, one of the best cars around to drive.

A punchy engine setup

While not delivering any performance boosts, using the regular Fiesta ST’s engine is a perfect base for any hot hatch. It’s a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine that sits under the bonnet. While being a cylinder down on the previous four-cylinder Fiesta ST, you certainly wouldn’t be able to notice.

In terms of figures, it produces 197bhp and 290Nm of torque – allowing for a 0-60mph time of 6.2 seconds and a claimed top speed of 144mph.

Bold styling

Some have criticised the regular Fiesta ST’s styling for just being a bit bland. Perhaps that’s a bit harsh, but it certainly doesn’t look especially different to the regular ST-Line version.

That’s where the Ford Performance Edition steps in to fill that void with this bold edition. All 600 units are painted in this bright Deep Orange colour, which stands out tremendously. To help with the look it also features LED headlights and 18-inch Ford Performance alloy wheels.

If you’re looking for the ultimate version of one of the best hot hatches around, this has to be it…
