Ford launches smartwatch app to monitor cars remotely

Ford has released a new application for smartwatch owners, allowing drivers to monitor the vital stats of any Ford electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

The MyFord Mobile app, which is compatible with the Apple Watch and Android Wear smartwatches, is available to download for free from Apple’s App Store and Google Play now.

Users can check the battery charge level of cars like the new Ford Mondeo Hybrid and C-MAX Energi, as well as the estimated driving range and can even use the app to locate their car in a busy car park, all from their wrist.

What’s more, MyFord Mobile can be used to lock and unlock the doors, as well as pre-engage the air conditioning or heating to set the cabin to the perfect temperature before getting in.

David Hatton, Ford Connected Vehicles and Services manager, said: “The app gives drivers the ability to quickly check important data like available range before leaving on a journey – without having to access the mobile application on their smartphone.

“The app can also notify users when their car is fully charged, helping a driver be courteous to other electric vehicle owners so they can free up the charging spot or avoid fees applied at some charging stations when you overrun your time after the charge is complete.”

Earlier this year, Mazda unveiled a similar app for smartphones, which allows drivers to remotely start their car’s engine for up to 30 minutes at a time from virtually anywhere.

The Mazda Mobile Start app can also pre-heat or cool the interior, lock and unlock the doors and also features a panic alarm function for emergencies and a GPS system to guide drivers to their cars.
