After making its debut in January in Detroit, Ford has confirmed that the Bullitt-inspired Mustang special edition will be available in Europe later this year.
Created to celebrate the anniversary of the iconic film Bullitt from 1968 – starring Steve McQueen – where a Mustang Fastback starred in one of cinema’s most iconic car chases, the modern interpretation is fitted with a 5.0-litre V8 engine that produces 457bhp and 526 Nm of torque.
To help mark the European launch at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, Steve McQueen’s grandchildren Chase and Madison McQueen starred in a car chase around the Alps starring the new model, with their father Chad also starring.
On helping launch the European version of the Mustang Bullitt, Chase McQueen said: “At home we're surrounded by memorabilia and reminders of our grandfather's role in ‘Bullitt’, and we've watched the film more times than I can remember, so to be part of launching the third-generation Mustang Bullitt here in Europe has been a special experience.”
Madison added: “Our dad, Chad, taught us to drive in Fords along the Californian coastal roads, so it’s been amazing working alongside him and new car. We were over the moon that Ford and the Steve McQueen estate were recently able to donate the first new Mustang Bullitt VIN 001 for auction, raising $300,000 for charity.”
The special edition model will be available in either shadow black or dark highland green – the paint colour used on the film car – and will come with a raft of high-end options. Those include Recaro sports seats, a 12-inch digital instrument display, 19-inch alloy wheels, a Bang & Olufsen surround sound system, colour detailing dependent on the exterior colour choice and a special plaque marking which production unit the car is.
Other design features include a white gear knob, red Brembo brake calipers and a fake fuel filler cap to mirror the one on the 1968 car.
The special edition also comes with driver assistance technologies and adjustable suspension so you can get the right setup for you.
Production of the limited-run model starts for European customers in June, but the sale date is yet to be confirmed – although don’t expect to be too far away. Deliveries of the Mustang Bullitt will begin later on this year.
