Ford Mustang is again the world’s best-selling sports car

In similar fashion to 2015, the Ford Mustang has been found to be the world’s best-selling sports car last year according to data analysis.

Ford says it has studied 2016 sales data from IHS Markit, and while the USA predictably made up the bulk of sales, it has been revealed that 45,000 Mustangs were sold outside America last year.

This means that sales outside the US for the Mustang increased by 101 per cent compared to the year before, with most of the growth occurring in Germany and China. IHS has confirmed that last year the Mustang’s global sales outperformed other sports cars like the Mazda MX-5, Porsche 911 and Nissan 370Z.

The current Ford Mustang launched in Britain in early 2016 and is now available in 140 countries. It’s estimated that a quarter of the Mustang’s sales are made outside of the US.

An updated, 2018 model year version of the Mustang is in development and it will launch to current markets as well as six additional countries which include Brazil, Ivory Coast and the Palau Islands.

This updated version of the Mustang, which comes with a facelift and new ten-speed automatic gearbox, is expected to arrive in the UK in early 2018.
