Ford’s Mustang has achieved a third year at the top of the world’s coupe sales charts, with 125,000 units sold in 2017.

The American brand found that out of the 418,000 Mustangs sold since global exporting began in 2015, the most popular version was the GT, which is fitted with the signature 5.0-litre V8 engine.

Of the 13,100 models sold in Europe last year, Germany (5,742), the UK (2,211) and France (942) were the most popular markets for the sports coupe.

Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst, said: “The world is falling in love with Mustang. Mustang represents the best of American design, performance and freedom, with an unmistakable personality that’s appeals – regardless of your post code.”
