Ford Mustang is the world’s best-selling sports coupe

It has been confirmed that the Ford Mustang was the best-selling sports coupe across the world in 2015.

Last year, Ford launched its latest-generation Mustang to markets around the world, including in Britain where it’s offered in right-hand drive for the first time.

Over 100,000 sales

This is the first ever Mustang to be officially sold in Britain and to be sold as a more global product under Ford’s World Car strategy. Nowadays, the Mustang is now available in as many as 140 countries.

A report earlier this month revealed that during last month, the Mustang outsold other sports cars in the German car market, beating even local competition like the Audi TT and Porsche 911.

Now registration data from HIS Automotive reveals that in the entirety of 2015, Ford sold around 110,000 units of the latest Mustang coupe across the world, as well as 30,000 examples of the convertible version.

The sales figure estimate for the Mustang coupe surpasses what every other sports coupe managed across the globe last year. The total exact figure for Mustang’s registered globally last year when combining both coupe and convertible sales is 141,868 – securing the Mustang’s position as the best-selling two-door sports car in the world.

V8 a hit outside US

Ford sales analyst, Erich Merkle, said: “Global markets have responded in a huge way. Ford Mustang was the only sports coupe in the world with more than 100,000 units registered last year.

“While much of the growth in Mustang demand in the United States has come from coastal markets – especially Southern California – and millennials opting for the 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, buyers in other countries prefer the V8,

“That unmistakable V8 warble is a hot commodity outside the U.S.”

That last statement certainly correlates with recent reports that in Britain the V8 engine is by far the most popular choice of power unit.
