Ford Mustangs gather to celebrate 55 years of an icon

Mustang owners across the world gathered last Wednesday to mark 55 years of production of the most famous American muscle car.

Ford has marked 55 years since its famous Mustang first rolled off the production line on April 17, 1964.

Last week saw Ford marking the ‘pony car’s’ 55th birthday, with celebrations taking place across Europe, and, unsurprisingly, in the Mustang’s homeland of America.

At Ford’s UK headquarters in Dunton, Brentford (Essex), 66 Mustang owners gathered mid-week to bring the firm’s classic models together alongside the latest cars. A handful of owners also decided to spell out ‘55’ with their machines.

Mustangs from all generations joined together – from the legendary first model through to the latest facelifted car, which reached showrooms last year.

The muscle car has one of the greatest followings in the car community, and thanks to the official introduction of the model in Europe in 2015, it’s been the best-selling sports coupe globally ever since.

Other feats the Mustang has achieved include becoming the most popular car to be tagged on Instagram with there being over 10 million uses of #Mustang on the social media site. The American model is also one of just a handful of automotive nameplates to exist as long as it has.

The Mustang is offered in two guises – ‘Fastback’ coupe and ‘Roadster’ convertible with prices starting from £37,685 for the 2.3-litre EcoBoost model, and £42,810 for the more desirable 5.0-litre V8 car. A special edition green ‘Bullitt’ model is also on sale now to mark 50 years of the legendary film starring Steve McQueen.
