Ford planning to expand RS performance line-up

With the release of the new Ford Focus RS imminent, Ford officials have apparently confirmed that it’s due to expand the RS range even further.

According to a report from Auto Express, Ford’s executive vice president of global marketing, sales and service, Steve Odell, has confirmed a string of new RS-badged models are in the pipeline.

Odell told the magazine: “The RS brand is really valuable. People race it. People collect it. I believe there is room to expand.”

New performance cars in the pipeline

Although he didn’t elaborate on exactly which models would join the RS family, it’s likely that the long-rumoured Fiesta RS will be the first candidate after being spotted testing last year.

Solid details on the Fiesta RS have yet to be released, but it’s expected that the race-tuned supermini could generate up to 250bhp via an uprated version of the same engine as the Fiesta ST.

Other models that could be soon sitting alongside the flagship Focus RS could include the Mondeo family saloon and even the Kuga SUV, along with various other models.

Ford appears committed to its performance car range, which has undergone a swift and exciting expansion in the past year or so with the release of the new Mustang and the upcoming Focus RS.

However, Odell denied that the RS brand would ever be made a standalone brand, saying: “When we went out and said ‘Transit is a brand, Focus is a brand,’ we did ourselves a disservice. Ford is the brand.”

The new Ford Focus RS is available to order now, with prices starting from £28,940 and first deliveries due to start in the spring.
