Ford unveils new 'EcoBlue' diesel EcoBoost engine

Ford’s range of popular and critically-acclaimed EcoBoost engines have now gone diesel, with the introduction of a new ‘EcoBlue’ version.

Due to debut first in Ford’s new Transit and Transit Custom vans, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder EcoBlue engine will be available in a variety of power outputs ranging from 99bhp to 237bhp.

Like the petrol EcoBoost motors, the EcoBlue has been built to deliver decent performance while offering optimum fuel efficiency and reduced emissions courtesy of its turbocharged design.

Diesel version of EcoBoost engine

Described by Ford as a “clean-sheet design”, EcoBlue uses an all-new engine architecture and some trick engineering to reduce friction in the engine components and thereby increase efficiency.

The engine also features a low-inertia turbocharger made from materials specifically designed to run at high temperatures, and it’s reportedly much quieter and more responsive than traditional diesels.

Compared against the outgoing 2.2-litre TDCi engine, Ford’s engineers say that the EcoBlue produces 20 per cent more torque but it’s only half as loud at idle.

Quieter and more efficient

Initially, the new 2.0-litre diesel engine will be available in 104bhp, 128bhp and 168bhp outputs in a variety of Ford’s commercial vehicles.

However, Ford says that it’s capable of producing upwards of 237bhp and will later feature in passenger cars, alongside a downsized 1.5-litre variant.
