Four in ten motorists delay getting their car repaired

Almost a quarter of UK motorists are putting off having their car repaired when a fault has been discovered, according to a recent study.

The Motor Ombudsman, a recently launched automotive dispute resolution body, surveyed 1,000 UK drivers and 43 per cent admitted to holding off on getting their car fixed despite finding a fault with it.

35 per cent of those who avoid seeing a mechanic explained that they don’t seek professional advice because they “can’t explain what is wrong with the vehicle”. 32 per cent said they feel “intimidated” by repair garages.

Worryingly, 38 per cent of motorists surveyed said they avoid having their car serviced, with over a third (36 per cent) fearing that they will be overcharged.

Drivers fear showing their ignorance

Jodie Kidd, a spokesperson for the launch of The Motor Ombudsman, commented: “I definitely understand that not knowing too much about cars can put people off taking their car to the garage – no one wants to draw attention to their ignorance!

“Another big worry is the cost associated with the work that needs to be done, meaning we’re skipping services. Having a reliable guide to help find a reputable garage with credible professionals fills us with confidence and allows us to address any potential issues.”
