Vauxhall is set to become the next manufacturer to enter the all-electric game, with a battery powered Corsa coming in 2019.
As part of a 25-year celebration of the hatchback, the British firm revealed an electric version will be arriving on the market next year — but gave no further details.
The Corsa is a regular face on UK roads, so an electric version could well challenge the Nissan Leaf for the crown of the most-sold electric vehicle soon after release.
It won’t be the first time Vauxhall has experimented with electrification. 2011 saw the introduction of the Ampera — a plug-in hybrid based on the Chevrolet Volt, that used a petrol engine to extend the range of the battery which could manage 53 miles on a single charge.
Earlier this year, PSA Group — the parent company of Vauxhall and Open since 2017 after purchasing both from General Motors — committed to offering an electrified version of every vehicle it offers by 2025. It’s likely the electric Corsa is a direct result of this commitment.
The Vauxhall Corsa was first introduced in 1993 and has since gone on to become an icon on British roads. It’s now in its fourth-generation, with over 2 million units of the hatchback sold since its original introduction.
