Geneva 2015: Porsche 911 GT3 RS debut

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS has been announced today at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, giving track day fans cause for celebration. Past iterations of the GT3 RS have been praised for their incredible handling and raw performance, giving customers a taste of the performance of Porsche’ racing cars, but fitted with number plates and some creature comforts.

Released with bright orange paintwork, the RS is fitted with a 4.0-litre flat-six engine producing 493bhp. It’s enough power to get it from 0-62mph in 3.3 seconds, with gearshifts taken care of by a dual-clutch PDK automatic gearbox. Zero to 124mph takes just 10.9 seconds.

The RS looks significantly different too, with a wider body taken from the 911 Turbo, aerodynamic aids all over its bodywork and a large rear spoiler. There’s also a 30cm-wide groove running down the centre of the roof and bonnet, in a nod to classic models.

Also striking are a large set of wheel arch air vents, spanning into the front wings of the car. These are said to further increase downforce acting on the front wheels.

Exotic materials including carbon fibre (seen in the bonnet) and a magnesium roof have been strategically used to reduce weight, and overall, the RS is around 10kg lighter than the standard 911 GT3.

In the cabin, its bucket front seats are based on those found in the 918 Spyder supercar, and a rear roll cage is standard. A six-point seatbelt, fire extinguisher and battery master switch are also available for those who expect to head out on track.

Choose the Sport Chrono Package and you’ll also have access to the Porsche Track Precision app, which can log lap times and vehicle data via GPS and share and compare them with other drivers.

The latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS is already available to order from £131,296, with the first cars expected in showrooms this May.
