Grey retains its place as the UK’s favourite car colour

Almost one in four new cars sold in 2019 was finished in grey paint.

Last year saw grey take its place as the UK’s favourite new car colour for the second year running.

The number of grey cars registered in the UK was up to 5.3 per cent year-on-year in 2019, rising to 521,273 — representing 22.6 per cent of all new cars.

It was followed up by black – which took the top spot back in 2017 – with 466,756 registrations, according to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). White took third place with 414,403 registrations. In fact, registrations of cars in black and white fell by 2.4 per cent and 4.1 per cent year-on-year respectively.

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said: “For most buyers, the colour is the first of many options they’ll select on their new car, and today there are more possibilities to personalise your car than ever before.

“Drivers can choose from many hundreds of models equipped with the latest low and zero-emission powertrains, advanced safety and connected tech, and exciting comfort and convenience features. There really is something to suit every driving need - and colour taste - on the market in 2020.”

The results mean that 60.7 per cent of all new cars sold in the UK last year were finished in a monochrome colour. The rest of the line-up showcased little change over the results in 2018, though yellow took the tenth-place spot away from beige.

Grey was the favourite colour across the country, with the only exceptions being Scotland and the Channel Islands, where white came out on top.
