Here is the 2017 BMW 5 Series

First images and details for the more practical 2017 BMW 5 Series saloon have arrived. Read on to learn more about the new executive car.

The first official images and details have been revealed for the new, seventh-generation BMW 5 Series saloon. The executive car is set to begin sales in February 2017, one month after it makes its first public appearance at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.

Like its predecessor, the new 5 Series will be fighting for sales against the likes of the Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF.

Design-wise the new 5 Series receives redesigns for detail like the headlights and kidney grille. Some details are reminiscent of the new BMW 7 Series and the 5 Series now has a subtly more aggressive-looking vibe plus more crease lines along the flanks.

Lighter and more practical

BMW says the new 5 Series is more aerodynamic, achieving a 10 per cent reduction in drag compared to its predecessor. The car is also lighter, with some specifications weighing around 100kg less than predecessors.

The new 5 Series is also slightly longer and taller before and the wheelbase has grown by 7mm. As a result, the executive model now has more interior space, with rear leg, shoulder and head room improving especially. The boot capacity is now at 530 litres, which is 10 litres than the previous 5 Series saloon offered.

Turbo engine line-up

Engine options for the BMW 5 Series are largely similar to those offered with the outgoing model. Confirmed engines include a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit with outputs of 188bhp, 248bhp or 335bhp. There’s also a 2.0-litre turbodiesel with 188bhp.

The initial flagship model, the 550d xDrive M Performance, will use a 4.4-litre V8 with 455bhp. A plug-in hybrid version of the new 5 Series called the ActiveHybrid is expected for the second quarter of 2017.

A Touring estate version of the new BMW 5 Series will reportedly arrive during the second half of 2017.
