High-performance Audi SQ7 in the works

Audi has revealed that the next-generation Q7 SUV range will feature a performance-focused derivative called the SQ7, which is expected to launch in 2016.

Last month, pricing and specification details were first announced for the new Q7, Audi’s latest large premium SUV. The new Q7 is available to order now in Britain and first deliveries are expected to begin this August. Prices start at £50,340.

Since this announcement, it has emerged that the new Q7 will introduce an all-new performance-focused derivative labelled the SQ7, that’ll arrive sometime following the new-generation model’s initial launch.

According to Audi’s head of technical development, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, the SQ7 will be driven by a V8 diesel engine supported by unique electric turbochargers branded ‘e-boost’. This technology has previously been seen on the Audi RS5 TDI-e concept shown back in 2014.

The idea behind the e-boost system is that it will cancel out turbo lag and this means the car will offer an incredibly fast throttle response. The electric turbochargers only work up to around 3,000rpm before it becomes unnecessary and therefore bypassed.

Performance figures for the SQ7 are unconfirmed, but a 0-62mph sprint time of under six seconds can be considered plausible.

Dr. Hackenberg has further revealed that the new Audi Q7 may introduce another additional specification which is set-up so that it is greater suited for off-road driving. This is provided, however, there is enough customer demand for such a version.

The Audi SQ7 will reportedly launch sometime in 2016.
