Honda’s new ‘e’ electric car will come as standard with digital mirrors

It’s one of the first production car to be fitted as standard with the camera mirroring system

Honda has confirmed that its new ‘e’ model will be fitted with the same ‘Side Camera Mirror System’ as the concept.

The cameras capture a live image of the side of the car and the stream the view onto two six-inch screens at either end of the dashboard. Honda claims the new system “ensures a natural feel and vision for the driver”.

While the cameras might look like they’re there for show, there are further benefits – particularly efficiency. That’s because they reduce drag by around 90 per cent compared to conventional door mirrors, as well as a significant reduction in wind noise at higher speeds.

The positioning of the mirrors also reduces blind spots, particularly in ‘wide view’ mode, when they can be cut by as much as 50 per cent.

Depending on the lighting, the brightness of the interior displays automatically alters, while extensive testing by Honda means that the cameras promise greater clarity and awareness than conventional mirrors, even in poor weather conditions.

Honda promises that the mirrors have a water-repellent on the glass to avoid water building up and distorting the view.

While the new ‘e’ isn’t the first production car to feature camera-based mirrors – as Volkswagen’s futuristic XL1 had a similar system in 2013, and Audi’s new all-electric e-tron has the tech as a £1,250 optional extra – it’s the first time the tech has featured on a compact car.

The Honda e is the Japanese firm’s first electric model, with the city-based model offering an electric range of 125 miles, as well as its funky styling.

While prices are yet to be announced, reservations for the new ‘e’ can be placed via Honda’s website.
