Hydrogen-run Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell price revealed

Pricing has been confirmed for the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell, the first mass-produced hydrogen car to be sold in Britain.

The Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell, the world’s first mass produced hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, is now available to order in Britain and pricing is set at £53,105.

This price takes into account a reduction made by a part-subsidy from the HyFive project, which is being headed up by multiple manufacturers including Hyundai, BMW, Toyota and Honda. It also aims to get 110 fuel cell electric vehicles deployed in Europe and three new hydrogen refuelling stations established in the London area.

With the aid of HyFive project, there should be five publically accessible refuelling stations in London by the end of 2015. Hyundai has revealed that without the part-subsidy from this project, the price of the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell would actually be increased to £67,985.

In terms of styling and interior, the ix35 Fuel Cell is virtually the same as the rest of the crossover’s range. Rather than using a conventional petrol or diesel engine, however, it’s driven by an electric motor run by two hydrogen storage tanks. This gives the car 134bhp and allows it to drive emission-free for up to 369 miles before a refill is required, according to Hyundai.

Prior to its launch in Britain, the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell was already available in 15 countries around the world, including 11 in Europe.
