Hyundai announces name for new crossover: Bayon

The new model will join the brand’s extensive range of SUVs

Hyundai has revealed the name for a new forthcoming SUV – Bayon.

It’s set to join the brand’s already extensive range of high-riding models, including the Kona, Tucson, Nexo and Santa Fe.

The Hyundai Bayon will arrive in the first half of 2021 as the brand’s smallest crossover – sitting beneath the Kona in the range – and is primarily targeted at European buyers.

That’s reflected in its name, with the South Korean manufacturer naming the car after the city of Bayonne in south-west France – following on from all its other models, which are also named after locations. The Kona, for example, is a district in Hawaii.

Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, vice president of marketing and product at Hyundai, said: “We are strongly established in the European SUV market already, in terms of our model range as well as our sales success.

“By launching a new, additional B-segment model as the entry point into our SUV line-up, we see a great opportunity to cover European customers’ demand even better and to increase our offering in a highly popular segment.”

Details on the new model are thin on the ground, but it is likely to be underpinned by the latest i20 supermini and benefit from that car’s striking design and mild-hybrid powertrains. Further details on the Hyundai Bayon are set to be revealed in the near future.
