Hyundai IONIQ EV updated with improved battery and connectivity

Powertrain improvements on Hyundai’s popular EV mean it now travel further between charges.

Hyundai has comprehensively updated its popular electrified IONIQ line-up with a refreshed design, an improved powertrain for the all-electric version and better connectivity.

The IONIQ was a game-changing model for Hyundai when revealed in 2016, as it was the first car that was planned to feature three electrified options – a traditional hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and the all-electric model.

It’s still a leader when it comes to eco-friendly models, with the key differences benefitting the Electric model. Its new 38.3kWh battery means it can travel 182 miles between charges, with an increase in energy storage by 36 per cent.

The two hybrid models are unchanged next to the outgoing car, but remain competitive next to rivals, with the plug-in hybrid able to travel 32 miles on electric power.

The new IONIQ features a new connectivity system known as ‘Blue Link’. The system allows users to remotely start the car away from the vehicle, using a smartphone app. It means drivers can control charging, the air-conditioning and even unlock the car without having to be stood next to their IONIQ. The updated model also introduces eCall, which is where emergency assistance is automatically asked for if the airbags are deployed.

Further connectivity updates include new LIVE services, with drivers receiving a free five-year subscription to this service (the same timeframe as the IONIQ’s impressive five-year warranty). It means users can receive real-time traffic weather and travel updates on the move, and it can also be used to identify the nearest available charging points on the plug-in and Electric versions of the IONIQ.

As for styling differences, the non-Electric models now feature a redesigned front grille, with the Electric model benefitting from a new pattern on its closed-off fascia. Revised front bumpers and new LED lighting is also offered, alongside four new paint colours and redesigned 16-inch alloy wheels across the three variants.

As for the cabin, customers now have the option of new leather upholstery colour, alongside a new 10.25-inch widescreen infotainment display and cool ambient mood lighting throughout the cabin.

The IONIQ has always been a leading model for safety – especially given its five-star safety rating – but it has taken another leap forward with the addition of the SmartSense safety package being fitted as standard to all models. This includes tech such as smart cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist to name but a few features.

UK prices and specs are yet to be announced for the updated IONIQ, but a small jump over the current car’s £21,795 starting price is expected, which reflects the improvements being made to the popular model.
