Hyundai IONIQ gives insight into hybrid future

The Hyundai IONIQ will be an alternative fuel rival to the Toyota Prius when it arrives.

Hyundai has today unveiled the hybrid version of its forthcoming IONIQ, which is expected to be a rival to the Toyota Prius and Nissan LEAF. Uniquely, it will be available with three powertrains when it’s launched: all-electric, plug-in electric hybrid (PHEV) or petrol hybrid, tailoring it to the lifestyle and budget of the customer.

Hybrid Powertrain

The IONIQ hybrid has a 1.6-litre direct injection petrol engine and a 43bhp electric motor, giving a combined maximum output of 141bhp, slightly exceeding a Hyundai i30 1.6-litre CRDi family hatchback. Power is fed to the wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

Hyundai claims it’s aiming for class-leading performance and economy, with electric-only running possible at speeds of up 75mph.

Low-drag design

From the outside, the IONIQ has a sleek coupe-like profile, designed to help it achieve a super slippery 0.24 Cd drag coefficient. At its nose the IONIQ looks familiar, with Hyundai’s large hexagonal grille finished in gloss black, but the rear of the IONIQ has quite a distinct look. To ensure its low drag, the hatchback is split in two, with a top rear window which is almost flat, and second vertical window, separated by a spoiler.

What's it like on the inside?

Inside, the main talking point is the seven-inch touch-screen, which boasts displays for the functioning of the hybrid powertrain, and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity if you have a compatible smartphone.  You can expect it to be very refined too, because the chassis, body trim and windows have been tuned for refinement, to match the quiet-running of the hybrid powertrain.

Recycled or eco-friendly materials have been used for much of the interior trim, and even the paint includes soybean oil. The battery pack is located under the rear seats for minimum cabin intrusion, freeing up a total luggage capacity of 750-litres when the rear seats are folded down.

The IONIQ is also loaded with safety equipment, with autonomous emergency braking, Lane Keeping Assist System, Lane Departure Warning System and Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
