The South Korean brand said that it has made its fuel cell technology more durable in extreme conditions as well as improving the cooling system and efficiency – with Hyundai saying “the Nexo has improved power density and durability comparable with petrol-powered vehicles.”

Dr Woong-chul Yang, Hyundai vice chairman, said: “Hydrogen energy is the key to building a more sustainable society. Hyundai Motor Company has already taken a lead in hydrogen technology with the introduction of the ix35 Fuel Cell.

“I am so proud to introduce to you our second-generation Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle which is a culmination of our cutting-edge technologies.”

With this new system, the Nexo can get from 0-60mph three seconds faster than the ix35 with a time of 9.5 seconds and provides more torque.

Hyundai also took this opportunity to display some of its latest driver assistance technology on the Nexo, with an industry-first blind-spot view monitor offering side camera angles of the vehicle.

Also displayed was Hyundai’s new lane following assist, highway driving assist and remote smart parking assist systems.
