Hyundai’s world first ‘contactless car’ supports cancer charity

A one-off Hyundai IONIQ that can receive contactless bank card donations for a cancer charity has been revealed, and it will begin touring the UK in May.

Hyundai has created a unique version of its IONIQ Electric hatchback which allows people to donate to charity by tapping the exterior with a contactless bank card.

This car is part of a world first fundraising initiative in support of Stand Up To Cancer. The IONIQ’s body sports five embedded contactless payment points. From these, people can ‘tap to give’ £5 or £10 to Stand Up To Cancer. The bespoke car will react to every donation through audio, visual or electronic movement cues.

On top of this the Contactless IONIQ also features an in-car photo booth which will instantly print photographs that can be stuck onto the Hyundai’s exterior. Gradually, the car will be covered in a photographic mosaic showing the faces of those who’ve donated to Stand Up To Cancer.

An instantly updating ‘totaliser’ will replace the number plates to show how much money is being raised.

The Contactless IONIQ will be presented to the public at a launch event at King’s Cross station May 22. This will be followed by a roadshow where the car will appear at events and Hyundai dealerships throughout the UK between May and November this year.

The President and CEO of Hyundai UK, Tony Whitehorn, said: “We are extremely proud to be supporting Cancer Research UK this year as an official partner of Stand Up To Cancer, and we’re helping in the way that we know best – with innovation.”
