Hyundai unveils new i20 N as 201bhp hot hatch

The new model will go head-to-head with the Ford Fiesta ST

Hyundai has revealed the second hot hatch in its ‘N’ line-up – the i20 N.

Joining the sporty version of the i30, this new smaller hot hatch takes inspiration from the championship-winning i20 WRC rally car and arrives with a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine under its bonnet – producing 201bhp and 275Nm of torque.

Weighing just 1,190kg, the i20 N can reach 60mph in 6.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 143mph. A six-speed manual gearbox is used, while a mechanical limited-slip differential is available – controlling how power is sent to individual wheels to maximise traction and grip.

Following on from the new i20, which has already been unveiled in N-Line form, this hot hatch sits 10mm lower than the standard car, and also gains a wider grille and red accents throughout. At the back it gains a rally-inspired spoiler, a diffuser built into the bumper and a large single exhaust. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are also fitted, while Hyundai N’s trademark ‘Performance Blue’ colour is also available.

The cabin also benefits from sports seats, an N steering wheel and gear knob, as well as blue stitching throughout.

Most of the dynamics have also been retuned compared with the standard i20, while it also gains larger brakes and dedicated sporty driving modes – including N and N Custom. Performance features like launch control and rev matching are also included.

At the same time, Hyundai has also announced prices for the regular i20 supermini, which is available from £18,895. All models come with more standard kit than before, as well additional technology and efficiency thanks to its 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrains.

Pricing for the i20 N will be announced closer to when the model arrives in 2021, but expect it to start from around £24,000.
