Nissan’s up-market sub-brand INFINITI looks likely to break into the electric car market by the year 2020.

Popular for its sleek coupe models, INFINITI has yet to breach the full EV market, although it has explored the hybrid market with numerous concept cars over the last ten years or so.

An Electric INFINITI by 2020?

According to reports from Autocar however, INFINITI’s president Roland Krueger has confirmed that the carmaker is looking to debut an electric INFINITI sports car by the year 2020.

Krueger has apparently driven a prototype of the new EV, telling Autocar that it is “very good”.

INFINITI EV to be standalone model

Interestingly, INFINITI has said that this EV will be a standalone model, which is to say that it won’t be based on any of the current INFINITI range models.

This means that one of INFINITI’s past concept cars, like the Lotus Evora-based Emerge-E or Essence – both of which were unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, could inspire the first-generation of all-electric Infinitis.

Krueger has also said that the new EV will draw on Nissan’s electric car knowhow to create the new EV.

If concept cars like the 400bhp plus Emerge-E are anything to go by, INFINITI could very well be looking to challenge higher-end, innovative sports cars like the Porsche 918 Spyder.
