Is the MG ZS EV the ultimate affordable electric car?

MG’s ZS EV is one of the most appealing battery-powered models around, not least for your wallet

While electric cars have many benefits, not least their low running costs, zero-emissions motoring and ease of driving, their appeal can be limited because of their high prices.

Despite battery technology improving, electric models still remain pricey next to petrol and diesel versions. That was until the MG ZS EV came along last year – bringing some well-needed value to the electric car world.

So is it the ultimate affordable electric car? We reckon so, and here’s why…

Cheaper than many electric superminis

MG is known for offering great value for money, and the ZS EV is no exception. Its £25,495 starting price might not be as affordable as the regular ZS, but this still undercuts plenty of smaller electric superminis – such as the Vauxhall Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208. It’s also noticably more affordable than two of its key rivals, the Hyundai Kona Electric (£30,150) and Kia e-Niro (£25,595).

Seriously spacious family car

Electric cars often suffer from having small boots – their batteries typically being stored under the boot floor or the rear seats, making them not as spacious as regular models.

However, that’s no such issue with this MG as it’s just as roomy as the petrol ZS it’s based on. Its 448-litre boot is one of the largest of any small crossover (regardless of powertrain), and increases to 1,375 litres with the rear seats folded, it’s far larger than the likes of the Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Kona Electric. Rear seat space is generous as well and it’s ideal for both children and adults.

Decent electric range

While the ZS EV’s electric range isn’t class-leading, it’s worth considering this MG is considerably cheaper than the opposition. It features a 44.5kWh battery, which is a similar size to that of smaller EVs.

In terms of range, MG claims it can travel for 163 miles per charge, which should be plenty for most journeys – especially those that just do smaller runs.

Seven-year warranty

If you want to keep your car for more than a couple of years, for extra peace of mind you should look at the manufacturers offering the longest warranties.

And MG has one of the most generous warranties around – giving you seven years of cover for up to 80,000 miles. While electric cars have proven to be just as reliable as regular models, if not more so, MG’s warranty can certainly provide extra peace of mind.

Loads of standard kit

If you like getting plenty for your money, the MG ZS EV is the car for you. Even the standard ‘Excite’ models come absolutely laden with standard kit – including keyless entry, an eight-inch touchscreen with smartphone mirroring and sat nav, as well as MG’s brilliant ‘Pilot’ driver assistance features.

Jump up to the top-spec Exclusive and you get even more kit, such as an electric driver’s seat, panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery and even more safety kit. It’s safe to say few EVs offer better value for money than the MG ZS EV.

Generous offers from MG

MG is known for its brilliant offers, which run on top of the already-low prices. And if you buy an MG ZS EV before September 30, you can benefit from the firm’s excellent ‘Peace of Mind’ offer.

With this, the ZS EV comes with a package amounting to £1,500 – including three years free servicing, a complimentary type 2 charging cable (allowing for easy public charging) and free home wallbox installation.

On top of this the firm is offering a finance contribution of up to £2,500, and along with a 4.9 per cent APR rate, it means a ZS EV is available for just £279 per month, which makes it superb value for money.
