Jaguar adds new entry-level petrol engine to E-Pace line-up

Jaguar E-Pace range updated with new engine and AI tech

The British firm is also adding adaptive suspension and AI technology to its baby crossover.

Jaguar has added a new smaller petrol engine to its E-Pace line-up, as well as a host of other technologies.

The new petrol engine is a 2.0-litre Ingenium unit, which develops 197bhp. It slots in underneath the more powerful 247bhp and 296bhp petrol variants.

It’s a punchy engine, and can accelerate from 0-60mph in 7.7 seconds, and has a claimed fuel economy figure of 34.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 186g/km. Jaguar has also fitted all engines with particulate filters, too, to improve efficiency.

Despite Jaguar’s smallest crossover only being on sale for a few months, the firm has added tech to it already.

The first of this is adaptive suspension, which is said improve handling response, body control and the ride. Adaptive Dynamics monitor the vehicle’s movements every two milliseconds and change the damping accordingly to reduce body roll and improve the ride. There’s also a choice of two modes – Normal and Dynamic (sporty) – depending on preferences.

Another new feature of the E-Pace is the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.  Known as Smart Settings, the technology debuted on Jaguar’s I-Pace electric SUV. AI looks at a driver’s habits and can adjust the car to their desired tastes.

This allows the car to sense an approaching driver and their smartphone’s Bluetooth, and can adjust the seat, climate and infotainment based on a driver’s typical preferences. If trends and algorithms can be observed – the car being started at a particular time each day, for example – it allows the vehicle to be tailored automatically to such conditions. As part of this, the car will also alert you if you’ve left your phone in it, too.

Smart Settings is offered as part of Jaguar’s Connect Pro Pack, which also includes a Wi-Fi hotspot and satellite navigation.

The new E-Pace petrol engine can be ordered now, priced from £33,500. A cheaper 148bhp diesel engine is available, and costs from £28,500.
