Jaguar F-TYPE adds entry-level four-cylinder engine

The Jaguar F-TYPE will soon have a lower starting price as a new entry-level model with a 2.0-litre petrol engine will join the range this spring. Click here to read more details.

The Jaguar F-TYPE is getting a new entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which will go on sale this spring priced from £49,900.

This new Ingenium engine starts more than a couple grand cheaper than the V6 which has up until now served as the F-TYPE’s entry-level unit. Jaguar will present its F-TYPE with the new four-cylinder engine onboard later this month during the 2017 New York International Auto Show.

Performance and efficiency figures confirmed

Mated to an eight-speed Quickshift automatic gearbox as standard, the new Ingenium 2.0-litre engine produces 296bhp and 400Nm of torque from 1,500rpm. Power is sent to the rear-wheels and there is no option for a manual gearbox or four-wheel drive.

With the Ingenium onboard, the F-TYPE covers the 0-62mph sprint in 5.7 seconds and can reach a top speed of 155mph. Compared to the 335bhp V6 that use to be the entry-level engine, the 0-62mph sprint time for the new entry-level model is only 0.4 seconds slower.

The Ingenium also noticeably improves fuel economy compared to the V6 model, which claims 33.6mpg and emits 199g/km of CO2. With the new engine, the F-TYPE claims 39.2mpg and emits 163g/km of CO2.

Weight saving and unique exhaust

One of the main reasons the new entry-level Ingenium model is more efficient is weight reduction. With the new 2.0-litre onboard, the F-TYPE is 52kg lighter than the V6 models. In response to the weight loss, Jaguar has tweaked the steering and suspension to ensure the sports car still delivers a very sharp and responsive drive.

The exhaust has also been fine-tuned to help make sure the 2.0-litre engine won’t disappoint in terms of the sound emitted from it. F-TYPE models with the Ingenium engine also get a distinct oblong exhaust tip mounted in the middle of the rear bumper to make them stand out more.

The new engine and relevant driving set-up changes make up just one part of a series of changes introduced to the refreshed F-TYPE range launching this year. As well as the new engine, the F-TYPE is also receiving redesigned bumpers, full LED headlights and extra driver assist features like autonomous emergency braking.
