Lamborghini shuts Italian factory amid escalating Coronavirus outbreak

The Sant’Agata factory will close until March 25.

Lamborghini has confirmed that is has closed its Sant’Agata Bolognese production facility following the outbreak of Coronavirus that has placed a ‘shutdown’ across Italy.

With the performance car manufacturer’s factory being right close to the heart of the outbreak in Bologna, Northern Italy, the Lamborghini facility has shut up shop for the next 13 days, until March 25. The country has the highest confirmed number of cases outside of China, with more than 1,000 Coronavirus-related deaths reported in Italy.

Stefano Domenicali, chairman and chief executive of Lamborghini, said the decision was an “act of social responsibility”.

He added: “This measure is an act of social responsibility and high sensibility towards our people, in the extraordinary situation in which we find ourselves right now in Italy and which is also evolving abroad due to the worldwide spread of Coronavirus.

“As we have done up until now, we continue to monitor the situation in order to react rapidly and with the right flexibility, in collaboration with our people and in order to restart with energy in the right moment.”

Fiat and Ferrari have announced that their facilities will continue production, though under strict conditions, while elsewhere the virus has caused the Geneva Motor Show to be cancelled, and the New York Auto Show to be delayed.
