Lamborghini Urus revealed as the fastest SUV in the world

This is the brand’s first SUV since production of the LM002 finished 25 years ago, and it is fitted with Lamborghini’s first turbocharged engine.

Lamborghini has unveiled its first SUV in a quarter of a century with this - the Urus.

The Italian manufacturer brands it as a ‘super sports utility vehicle’ thanks to its sports car-like performance and dynamic looks.

Fitted with a turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine – a company-first – the Urus has 641bhp at its disposal, with that power supplemented by 850Nm of torque.

That grunt is driven through a four-wheel drive system with an active torque differential to divert the power around the chassis to where it is needed most. It also has rear-wheel steering to help with cornering – a system that was first used on the Aventador S supercar.

Even though it weighs just shy of 2,200kg, the Urus has the best power-to-weight ratio in the dynamic SUV segment, which means a 0-60mph time of 3.4 seconds and a scarcely believable top speed of 190mph.

With the Tamburo driving dynamic control system, drivers can choose from up to six modes depending on the conditions – Strada, Sport, Corsa (Track), Neve (Snow), Terra (Off-road) and Sabbia (Sand). Each one changes the dynamic settings of the car.

The looks of the Urus are distinctly Lamborghini, with the sharp creases, coupe-like styling and recognisable Y-shaped LED headlights on show. The frameless doors fit in with the sloping roof line.

The Urus sits on specially-developed Pirelli P-Zero tyres wrapped on 21-inch alloys as standard, with 23-inch wheels an optional extra. You also get adaptive air suspension and carbon ceramic brakes as standard.

Inside is the premium interior you would expect, with leather upholstery adorning the sport seats in the front, rear bench and dashboard. Customers can choose to remove the rear seats and place two sports seats there instead for a more dynamic feel for all passengers.

Other features include a dual-central touchscreen – first seen in parent company Audi’s A8 – with a full-infotainment system, Bluetooth, smartphone connectivity and USB connection.

Prices for the Urus start from £131,500, with the first deliveries taking place in Spring 2018.
